Character History:
Rumbling was the only sound he heard for this entire war. He now was fighting in a war against those who took all of the things he loved away. Nazis, the ones who made him destroy his old life. He had been giving his hardest against them. Through four years he still lived, even though his unit had nearly been demolished in every major campaign.Writing Sample:
First it was Allen in Africa, Greg in Sicily, Brian in Italy, George in France, and Carl in Holland. Why did everyone die except for him.
Walter Josef Gunther was born in 1911 to Marie and Jan Gunther. Jan Gunther was a tank commander during the first world war. In 1918 his crew had been captured then killed. After getting news of this, Marie committed suicide, leaving seven year old Walter in the care of a catholic orphanage.
Inside the orphanage, he learned from a great deal of subjects, including religion. Though, his main area of interest was mathematics and how they could be used in strategy. The affect of his father being in the military had an effect on him. He was an excellent player of chess.
Through his burning hatred of Germany, led him to want to leave. He was thinking of leaving for America, so that he didn't have to stand the people. He started to learn English from the nuns. A trade was given by the nuns, that he would join their service people. In the group they got into fights, where he would be in the front. he stayed with the group for many years until he was finished learning. At the age of 22 he was living in the beginning of the Nazi age, where few supporters of the church would get into open brawls against the Nazis. In one incident, Walter killed a friend who joined the Nazi Movement, and became swept away within grief. As retribution the church and orphanage was burned to the ground, leaving Walter to wonder where was God when that happened.
Upon turning 23 he left for America with thoughts of retribution against the Nazis and all of Germany. Although he thought this he was against war, because it claimed so many lives.
While turning 29, the war in Europe had started. This was the beginning of his effort to bring the war to a quick end. He signed up at the local army recruitment center. When they heard his German accent, they thought he was a spy. He proved them wrong by asking to join the Armoured Corps, so he could stop the war quickly.
Upon entering the service, with the Armoured Corps, he showed excellent tactical awareness. He quickly advanced in the ranks until he was a commander of his own tank. In the invasion of Africa his tank was hit, he was the lone survivor of the battle. He was promoted due to his action in battle, and has become the commander of his own armoured unit.
(OOC: I decided to create my own scenario to fit a tank commander.)Approved/Denied?: Neither Yet
The desert, where the Allies had made their first advances. Among the only American armoured units in Africa, the 1st Armoured Division, was the most well known. Especially to General Patton. 1st Lieutenant Walter Gunther was commander of the 69th Armoured Regiments Charlie Company's tank "Kraut Whacker".
Walter was to saw combat alongside the 1st Infantry at Kasserine Pass. His tank had been hit by a Panzer and was knocked out. Everyone besides Walter had been killed.
Now, with the infantry having retreated, Walter was left near his tank waiting for it to explode. "Why?" was the one question running through Walter's mind as he lay there. Why had he been the only one to survive. Could it have been because he had the hatch open and was firing the .30 at the incoming soldiers.
The explosion had knocked him out of the tank. The battle had been two hours earlier, and the sky was already getting dark. Walter noticed this, and decided to move his legs. A surge of pain moved up his left leg. As he looked down at it, through the dim light, he saw it was cached with blood. "So it had a scab over it, and I tore it open." Walter told himself. Somehow this made him grin. As he started to pull himself up, while keeping his leg straight, he heard a person call out. "Was ist da drüben?"
Walter stopped moving and looked to where the sound came from, and called back, "Es ist mir mein Freund.", as the German soldier heard this he walked over to him. "This is my chance." he told himself.
As the soldier got closer, he pulled out his .45 and called out "Halt oder das Kaminfeuer." The soldier stopped, and saw what he was looking at to be an American soldier. He then began to run away. "I'm sorry friend." Walter said in English and fired one shot off. The shot pierced the lower neck of the soldier, dropping him immediately.
Walter then turned around and looked for something he could use to return to his base. Then he wondered how the other soldier had gotten here.
He thought the German must have come with a jeep or a motorcycle that he could use. So, Walter headed off in the direction the other soldier was coming from.
A sound came closer to him of an engine when, a jeep pulled up. There was one soldier, probably here to investigate the shot he had fired. As the soldier saw the body Walter fired one shot at him, the bullet pierced him in the central chest, killing him.
Walter started forward to the jeep. He climbed into the driver's side and started it up. He started of in the direction of the base.
It took him one hour to return to base. As he got there, he noticed that the soldiers were looking at him strangely. At this moment he noticed all the soldiers were standing at attention. As Walter looked around, he saw General Patton standing next to General Allen. Patton turned to him, and opened his mouth to speak.
