Character History:
Isaac was born Thursday, January 22nd, 1914 to an upper class family in Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada. As a small boy, Isaac enjoyed exploring the area around the house and to search the basement for artifacts from the family's history. He had already found two working muskets, one a British Army musket, the other a hunting musket. Isaac usually just found books, some interesting, some older than time itself, and some that he just wasn't sure of. Isaac also liked listening to stories his father and grand-father told him, some were funny, sad, or (his favorite) about his family members serving in the military. He was proud of his family's long career in the military.Writing Sample:
By the time Isaac was going to school, he had excelled in all subjects but Math, which he still found challenging at times. He was especially good at Phys. Ed, enjoying it every minute. Isaac also got into trouble a bit at school, an example was playing soccer with shoes in the hallway. It didn't end well. Eventually, Isaac made it to high school, where he met the girl of his dreams. Her name was Margaret Turner. They continued to date through High School.
By the end of Isaac's school career, it was 1926, he, looking for a steady job, decided to move to the province capital, Halifax, with Margaret. There he worked at a local shop for a few months, still looking for a new job. On a trip back to Truro to visit family, Isaac was reminded of his family's history in the military. He knew what he wanted to do. The next day, Isaac went to the local recruiting office in Halifax and signed up, a grin on his face.
Isaac's fathers warnings were correct once training began. It was gruesome. It tested Isaac's abilities to the max, and yet, he flourished in the army environment. Eventually, Isaac finished training, he was a Master Corporal in The Nova Scotia Highlanders, one of the best regiments in Canada. He began garrison duties and found it a little boring, of course garrison duty was, and couldn't wait for some "action".
Nothing really happened in Isaac's life through the 1920s, he married Margaret, went through more military courses, and hoped for action. Isaac bought a house in the North End, and liked the fact that the houses there weren't very old. After the Explosion of 1917, the North End had been basically demolished but, with generous support, Halifax had been able to rebuild. Isaac continued garrison duty, living with his wife, and enjoying life.
Isaac's life went downhill a little by 1930 though. The Great Depression rolled around and Isaac got hit hard by it. He ended up losing his house, though Isaac luckily had friends in the city who let Margaret and Isaac stay until they could find housing. Isaac was one of the lucky few still able to say he had a job. With 30% of Canada's labour force unemployed, times were defiantly tough. Isaac continued to do garrison duty, though he was sent up to the nations capital for some training, and other related issues.
Isaac, worried and fearful of the Great Depression, also got excited during the 1930's. Trouble was brewing up in Europe and it was front page news whenever something happened. News of Germany taking over land got Isaac interested, and also the fact there was rumors going around stating that Britain would call Canada to help in a war against Germany. Well, those rumors were correct. On September 10th of 1939, Canada declared war on Germany, along with Britain and France. Germany had invaded Poland and wouldn't listen to Britain or France. Isaac ran to his friends, where they were still living, and told Margaret about this, though she already knew. She was worried, as all wives would be.
That Sunday, September 10th, 1939 was one of the busiest days Isaac had ever seen at the barracks. Men were rushing here and there, gathering gear and other items for the trip to Europe, which would probably happen soon. It wasn't just the barracks that was busy, the whole city was busy! Halifax being a big port, was full of military men from across the country, waiting to be shipped out. Eventually, it was his time to be shipped to Britain. Isaac kissed his wife, Margaret, and walked onto the ship, a smile on his face, his eyes full of happiness. It was time to write a new chapter in the Carter family history, a new story for future generations.
Master Corporal Isaac Carter blinked. His eyes stung by salt water. He was in a Landing Craft heading for Juno Beach. He looked around, the waves hitting the land craft as they flew across the channel, heading for an uncertain fate. He knew there were Germans, he knew there were heavy defenses in place. But what scared him was whether he would make it out alive, to see his loving wife, to see his family, to see his new baby boy, who had been born a month after he had left for England.Approved/Denied?: Approved
"Thirty seconds!" yelled the driver.
Isaac looked at the men in the land craft, most, if not all were at least in their 20's, maybe younger. Decision Day was upon them, who would prevail? Isaac thought this for maybe twenty seconds, he wasn't sure anymore.
The sergeant finished his talk about what they were to do and the driver yelled,
"Five seconds! Three!"
"Go Go Go!" yelled the Sergeant.
The door went down, the scene disgusted, and scared Isaac out of his mind. As he ran, he watched the man in front of him fall, he was about to stop when the sergeant pulled him forward again.
"Get to the f*cking seawall! NOW!" the Sergeant yelled. Isaac ran and got to his knees, crawling to a tank obstacle, his mind racing, wondering what to do next.
Isaac sat there, watching as more landing craft dropped the doors, men running out only to get shot to ribbons by the machine guns in the bunkers. He watched an officer run up to him, almost crawling, and looked him in the eye,
"Get to the seawall. If you want to see Margaret again, get to that bloody seawall." The officer said, Isaac, wondering how he knew his wife, willing himself to get up, and followed the men as they ran for the seawall, hoping not to get hit by the never ending fire.
Isaac made a low jump and grunted as he landed hard on his stomach, behind the seawall. Isaac looked around, then remembered he still had his rifle with him. he found some space where he could shoot properly and looked down the sights. He shot, and watched as the machine gunner stopped shooting. Had he shot him? Isaac looked around, there were tonnes of men shooting, so he couldn't be sure.
Isaac lay there, shooting for what seemed like forever, his ammunition slowly draining. Eventually, he found a Captain and a radioman beside him. The Captain was yelling at the radio operator to repeat what he was saying. Isaac looked around, and willed the courage to speak to the angry Captain,
"Sir, where are the engineers? They have what we need to get through the seawall."
"Well... Master Corporal" The Captain said, "currently our engineers are floating belly up that way!".
Eventually, engineers had been called in from down the beach, and placed explosives in the seawall, and after clearing the way, the Canadians ran like it was last call at the bar, through the blasted seawall and towards the bunkers. Isaac ran, staying near the Captain as he yelled at the soldiers to keep going.
