The war was over in Europe, It was just a matter of time in which everybody got sent home. Every time a truck, car, wagon, or horse passed through the checkpoint, Daniel and the other men on duty had to check them. The thing that Daniel was confused by was why division left armed German MP's at the check point. he guessed it was okay because they could speak English. One of them walked up to Daniel and said "so what are you going to do?" "what, you mean after I get home?" "Yes, that is what I mean. I am going home to rebuild my shop" "Is that right? I'm going to continue working at a shoe repair shop in Chicago." The two unusual friends exchanged stories from before and during the war and had a few laughs. As Daniel cleared a truck full of gasoline another truck further down the line of vehicles started to drive at the checkpoint at full speed. the German MP's and the US detail closed the gate and tried to wave down the truck, but I wasn't slowing down. One of the MP's yelled "we have to stop it, it is our duty." so the single German raised his pistol and shot out both of the front tires. As the truck passed the checkpoint erupted into a firefight, the truck had members of the SS who had not yet given up. Three men of the checkpoint got hit while the rest returned fire to the truck. During the shooting the truck became out of control since the front tires were out; the truck turned and flipped over sideways at full speed. Then everybody saw it; the gas truck they had just cleared had stopped so the driver could relieve himself. The truck, flipping at 40 mph smashed into the gasoline truck and sent sparks flying and gasoline spilling out if the 50 gallon drums. It took only one spark to ignite the gas. Everything went up in flames. "Du, um Hilfe rufen" Said one of the MP's to another. He ran into the booth and called for help. "Great the war is over but people are still dying" thought Daniel.

Rolf remembered the day it all ended. The most vivid memory in his life, actually. It would most likely stay that way for the rest of his days, playing over and over again in his mind, during day and night, sleeping and waking, the day it all collapsed. The day, of course, was May 7th, 1945, the day Germany surrendered to the Allies. Rolf's platoon were taken prisoner, and sent to a camp near the Ardennes. A few days later though, his platoon was reassigned to guard duty, since the Americans didn't have enough men to staff the guard points. So, he was given his old gar back, luckily it hadn't been taken by souvenir hungry Americans, and sent to a checkpoint, somewhere on the border of Germany and France, near Strasbourg, France, Rolf still said Strasbourg, Germany though.
So, Rolf was here, with a few of his men, the others sent somewhere else, and a few Americans, though one of them looked more like he was Asian then American. Rolf was walking back from taking a leak, the Asian American talking to one of his men, when a truck smashed through the barricade. It was filled with SS, and though Rolf was in a perfect position to stop them, he hesitated. Maybe fortunately, maybe not, his man stopped them, but not before the truck crashed into a tanker, which proceeded to do the obvious, and blow up. Rolf ran up to the two men a few microseconds after the explosion, and started talking with the Asian. "What happened here? Why did you let a truck of violent individuals through? Are you not supposed to stop threats like this?"

Fureys jeep was speeding along at full speed; he had just come from a recently captured German SS Airfield, where remainders of the German SS were holding out, despite their nation surrendering. They had soon piled onto a truck, along with some valuable papers, and sped away. He was the first person to get a vehicle to drive after them, His white jeep, and continued to speed down the road, out of the airfield and down a road, both sides surrounded by a forest. Soon enough, he could see the truck slowly getting away from him, despite being at full speed. Luckily, at least in his favor, he saw a checkpoint appear in the distance, manned by a few German and American Soldiers, and the truck slowed down. He picked up his Thompson from the back seat, continuing to hold the steering wheel with one hand, when he noticed the truck speed back up. He held his SMG on his lap and he continued to drive, soon enough he watched men open fire on the truck, and a small amount of relief entered his body, but soon, that dissipated, as the truck flipped on its side and into a Gasoline truck, erupting in flames. As he neared the checkpoint, he slammed on his brakes, and jumped out of the jeep. He recognized one of the men, He believed to be a man named "Daniel Steinert", but there was no time for re-acquaintance at that moment, he had to save the papers. He began to bark orders at two of the German Privates, yelling at them "GET THE PAPERS OUT OF THE BACK OF THAT TRUCK, AND PUT THEM ON MY JEEP! SCHNELL, SCHNELL!" He soon watched another German soldier run over to Daniel and begin to yell at him, as the Two Germans he just yelled at ran over to the truck, trying to get the rolls and piles of papers out of the back of the truck before the flames reached them. He walked over to the group, listening to the German yell at Daniel, and butted in for a moment, saying "If you wouldn’t mind, could you two do me a Favor and stop bickering for a moment, and grab as many papers out of the back of that truck that you can before it catches on fire.” He looked at one of the American soldiers, a Corporal, and yelled "Corporal! Don’t just stand there, Make sure no Americans are hurt in that Gasoline Truck!!!" At that moment, the only thoughts in his head were the thoughts of the papers, Plans and designs for German Fighter Jets, from the ME262, To the ME163 Koment, to the HO229 Horton Flying Wing, all planes that he had gotten the chance to fight in the last days over Berlin.

Immediately after the explosion Daniel started organizing an effort to get a fire bucket line started until an angry German came up to him."What happened here? Why did you let a truck of violent individuals through? Are you not supposed to stop threats like this?" He yelled. Daniel was somewhat taken aback. In retaliation he ejected his half empty magazine and stripped off a bullet with his thumb. "Do you think this could stop a truck?!?!?" A first Sergeant pulled up in a jeep and said "Knock it off, now there are important documents in that truck, go get them!!!" The German ran to get obey and Daniel recognized the face of the sergeant, but couldn't put a finger on it. Quickly he ran towards the wreckage and saw the driver he had checked out standing in the tree line with a look of shock on his face. "Private, nobody else was in your truck right?" "Um.....yea thats right, just me." "Good, now try and help out by pulling those documents out of the flames."
He quickly joined in by pulling documents away from the fire. He saw body parts strewn about the wreckage of the truck. He had seen dead people before but never like this. He also realized that that it was gas fire so it wouldn't go out by water. "You there" he pointed to an American private "take your jacket and start smothering the flames on the smaller bits of wreckage that flew into the forest. He and the private hunted down little bits of wood and metal that were aflame in the forest until he saw the unbelievable. There was a man limping away with a folder under his arm. "No way" he thought. He motioned the private to look at what he was looking at. "go back and tell that sergeant that we got a runner with some of the documents in the woods and I'm going after him." the private obeyed and ran back.
Daniel took his grease gun off safety and reloaded as the other one was empty from firing at the truck. The man seemed to know he was there as he weaved in and out of sight. Daniel ran after him when he heard another explosion behind him "what was that?" he thought. The man in front of him now getting closer drew a pistol and started firing. Daniel ducked behind a tree and counted to 8 shots. He scanned and saw the man now hobbling along so Daniel took aim and fired in three shot bursts. The man collapsed and tried moving towards his now fallen pistol and documents.
Daniel ran up, kicked the pistol away and then gave the man a kick in the ribs. "you speak English?" The man only looked up to reveal his half burnt face and said "Heil Hitler" as he took his last breath. Daniel scooped up the documents and put them in his ammunition pouch. He ran back as fast as he could only to meet a wall of flames. He had forgotten about the bits of flame that had flew into the forest. Once small embers now grew to an inferno. Daniel had no idea what to do. He ran back the way he had come until he saw the dead SS man. He stopped to catch his breath. The fire growing still larger started to light up the forest with a nice orange glow. "Now what?" he thought.

Rolf was taking a breath to continue his rant at the Asian-American, when an American 1st Sergeant rode up to them. He ordered Rolf and the Asian-American to grab the papers from the back of the truck. Rolf was half tempted to not help out, but he had to, so Rolf was running to the truck, and grabbed a big box of papers. He set them down a safe distance from the fire, and ran back to get some more. By the time the fire had reached the papers, Rolf had saved about half of them. Looking at one of them revealed that it was a detailed description of an ME262.
Rolf set the paper back in its box, and looked behind him to see the source of the newfound orange glow illuminating the area. Turns out the forest was on fire, and running from the fire was the Asian-American. Rolf decided to ignore him right now, and walked up the the 1st Sergeant. "Sir, I have a couple of questions. First, why do you have so many documents about jet aircraft, and second, may I bury my comrades' reamains, after the fire recedes enough for me to get to them?"

Furey Looked across the forest as the fire began to creep through the forest. He began to worry, hoping that the fire that was beginning here would not spread on, and burn most, if not all, f the forest down. He thought long and hard, hoping that soon water carriers and maybe the occasional German horse-drawn “Fire Truck” would show up to stop the fire from ravaging the dense German forest that stretched from here to Munich.
As he finally got the last of the papers before the truck burst into flames, he was confronted by a German Technical Sergeant, who asked him “Sir, what are these papers for?”
Furey Looked at him, and sighed, saying “The men in that truck were SS men, whom were attempting to escape with these papers. As I’m sure that you already know, they are for planes for the German fighter jet, something called A Messerschmitt 262. My superiors ordered me to salvage all plans possible for the experimental planes, and we hit a proverbial “Jackpot”, when we discovered that the airfield nearby actually had two of the planes that we had been searching for, the ME263 Koment, and the ME262. We managed to stop the SS Men as they tried to destroy them, but they managed to load up a truck full of papers, such as planes for these planes, and attempted to escape. As you can see here, they didn’t go very far.”
He paused, and listened as the German Private asked if he could bury his dead comrades when the fire receded, and he said “Yes, of course you may, and if you would like to, you can bury the dead SS men, if you please. Of course, you don’t have to, I can have some men come and take care of the bodies.”
As Daniel walked back towards him, he noticed he was holding a folder under his arms, and ran over, quickly taking the file, and opening it up, looking at it as he read it through. Although he didn’t speak German, he knew these were important plans, and as he sat on the hood of his Jeep, reading through his mind, all he could think of was the fact that a find this big could get in a big promotion. The titled across the top of it read “Top Secret! Me262 Engine Plans”

Rolf searched through his mind for any mention of the ME262, and remembered hearing something about it some time ago. "Ah yes. The Sparrow, I think it was called. It devastated your bombers, if only we had more. But that is all in the past now. Today, we work together for a brighter future." Rolf listened to the response, and heard some irregularities in this man's voice. It then dawned on him that the man he was talking to was Italien. Rolf thought his life had just taken a turn for the worse, now that he was working under an Italien. But, he decided to ignore it for now, and bury the bodies. "Thank you, sir. I will be a few hours, maybe. I'll have the other Germans help me."
After a few hours of digging, Rolf and the other Germans stationed there had buried all of the SS men that had been riding wild in the truck. "Ok men, we're done. Go take a rest, get some drink, and be back here in 30 minutes." The men walked somberly off, quietly mourning their fallen comrades. He saw the Italien, and walked over to him. "A pity that men have to die, even though there's no more fighting being done, isn't it? Hey, I don't think I got your name, sir. I'm Oberscharfuerher Rolf Blauvelt, formerly of the 600. SS-Fallschirmjaeger Battalion."

The day was winding down; all of the files had been returned mostly intact and the Germans were burying their fallen comrades. he watched as he saw them bury the one he had shot. Daniel wanted to talk with his old buddy from training but he sped off in his jeep too fast for Daniel to catch him. Daniel and the others cleared the wreckage off of the road and fixed the gate.
Daniel started to think about what one of the Germans had said to him about letting the truck through. When Daniel was relieved of duty instead of going back to camp, he went straight to the supply depot in a borrowed truck. He walked into the wooded building and walked up to the desk. "Tech. Corporal Daniel Steinert" he saw officer insignia and quickly added "sir." "Yes, what is it?" "I need 100 feet of barbed wire entanglement, 50 sandbags, 10 55 gallon empty barrels, and wooden anti-vehicle traps." The officer just stared at him and said "do you have authorization?" Daniel pulled out and arm with an SS arm band and placed it on his desk. "Checkpoint accident today, we didn't have the proper equipment, sir." The officer gave a look of disbelief and said "alright alright, just get that off of my desk." Daniel wrapped the arm back up and put it in his pouch. 'Thank you sir."
Daniel drove back to the checkpoint with a truck full of supplies. He got out and started setting up. He took the sandbags and filled them with dirt and debris and stacked them in two positions; one on each side of the road so it made sure only one vehicle could pass at a time. then he took the barbed wire and placed it in front of the sandbags. lastly he took the anti-vehicle traps and put them by the guard house for easy an deploy in the bottleneck. Silently he went to the grave sites of the SS men and he dug a separate grave for the arm. "God I hope I go home soon."
