Before Operation Market Garden, paratroopers would have to know how to use the armored units to their full potential, because one of the things that would make the operation work, would be the use of tanks to capture the cities and other objectives the paratroopers still needed help with. So, the job of teaching the airborne how to use the armored units, was sent to Walter Josef Gunther.
Walter was always wondering why the useless jobs were given to him, while the unit was out of action. Of course he already had his own suspicions about this. The one that he thought was correct, was the higher up officers didn't like having a German born officer among them. But, to deter those type of thoughts he would always tell himself, that even though the higher ups, would not trust him, his men always would.
For passing on these tactics Walter had grabbed a handful of wooden blocks from the intelligence room for his demonstrations. The unit he was assigned to go to was the 101st Airborne's, 506th Parachute Regiment. To most of the soldiers who stayed in London, their lives were easy, because everything they wanted or needed was right there. Walter was one of the men who rather be in the country enjoying the outdoors.
Walter was dressed in the usual uniform for being in a city and grabbed his bag and started walking to the garage where the various vehicles were being cared for. A sign-out board was at the front desk. When Walter came in, the soldier handed him the keys to a jeep, for his drive, without him even needing to ask. As he pushed through the door to the garage, he saw the closest jeep, and jumped in. While Walter was about to start the ignition, a young corporal walked over. "Excuse me Sir, I am to be your driver.", the lad said. "Alright, hop in. The destination is Aldbourne." Walter replied, as he moved over to the passenger seat. The corporal climbed in and started the engine. Soon, enough the jeep was out and on the road, gaining speed, and going in the direction of Aldbourne, England.
