Johan looked on as the Allies made their way into the trenches. Though somewhat disheartening, that was not what shocked him most. One of his men up and surrendered without a fight, taking his squad with him.
Johan took a couple of shots at the surrendering men before ordering himself and his men to fall back into the trench and find cover. As he ducked down behind some crates, he quickly pulled his grenade, pulled the primer and then threw it down the trench toward the advancing Allies.
“Two more grenades down the trench!” he yelled. A couple more stick grenades went flying to join Johan’s landing down the trench amongst the Allies.
They were now in confined quarters fighting. Johan had the upper hand in numbers and knowledge of what lay within the trench (which wasn’t saying much as the trench wasn’t all that big). What worried Johan most was whether more of his NCO operating men would surrender.
On the heels of the nearly dozen grenades, Johan raised his rifle and gave the next orders. “Fix bayonets!” He heard a quick sound off of confirmation that his men had completed their order. “3 more grenades down the trench now!”
Three more grenades went flying through the air down at the Allies in the trench once again. This was followed by more explosions in sequence. As soon as the last blast echoed up to his ears, Johan gave his last order: “Charge!”
He stood up in line with his men as they all charged down the trench guns blazing. The grenades would hopefully kill some Allies and faze the others. Regardless though, he was going to defend the trench.

As Masterson and his men charged down the trench, he could see several German grenades fall just before them. Masterson screamed to his men, ”German potato mashers! Toss ‘em back!” Masterson then kicked the nearest German grenade in front of him and watched it travel back down the German side of the trench and explode. Several more grenades continued to get thrown at them, each time a soldier would collect it and toss it back.
However, one grenade slipped under and behind Masterson. As he and his men continued, a mid-sized explosion came from behind them. A grenade had gone off that was missed, and Masterson could not tell if anyone had been hit, as he kept the charge going.
As the smoke cleared from the grenades thrown back, Masterson could see a body of German soldiers rushing to meet them with their guns drawn as well. He couldn’t see if they were walking over dead German bodies or not, but hopefully the grenades thrown back at them caused some damage.
As Masterson and his men neared the Germans who were charging as well, a large sporadic series of rapid fire let out from behind Masterson and his group. Masterson quickly took cover as bullets drove over his head and traveled down to the German side of the trench. Peaking over the trench, Masterson could see that the .30 caliber machine gun had finally reached the house, and was now in a clear line of sight of the trench, and was rightfully shooting the Germans attempting to charge Masterson.
Masterson grinned and looked at his men. ”Well come on you sons a bitches! Do you want to live forever?!” With that, Masterson gave his men the ultimate motivation, and the group moved as one down the trench finishing off what they had started.
Masterson approached the Germans first, he held his rifle before him and attempted to drive his bayonet into the ribcage of one of the Germans. Before he could find out if he had successfully stabbed him, Masterson’s men came from behind him and mimicked the tactic on other Germans. The .30 cal also continued to fire into the group of German soldiers, but nearly bordered the Americans as it passed across and into the trench. Surely the Germans were being slaughtered. Hopefully this final drive would be it, and the battle would be over.
Masterson, wanting this to end, as he battled he screamed out in his best German, ”Surrender! Surrender or we will kill you!”

Xavier could see Americans and Germans stabbing at each other, so he told his men to throw some grenades behind the enemy to at least knock them down. He thought of a strategic move but they were outnumbered. He could already hear some explosions but he couldnt see if someone got hit. Then he noticed it was useless to risk the lives of his men so he yelled: "Retreat! Retreat! Johan come before you die in action! I dont want to risk the lives of our men! Come!" On his retreat Xavier fired a couple more times at the enemy to at least decimate the number of fighting enemys. On his retreat Xavier hoped Johan would follow.

Johan stabbed at one of the enemy soldiers, but he was just a tad quicker and side-stepped it. However, as the enemy soldier brought up his rifle to fire at Johan, the tables turned. Johan twisted his rifle and sent the stock into the left side of the soldier’s face, sending him sprawling to the ground.
All around him the enemy was advancing and more were coming from the house. This battle had been lost and it was time to make a retreat. ‘Tis nobler to flee today so that you might fight tomorrow.
“5th squad, rear guard action now! Everyone else, follow Xavier!” he yelled. A handful of soldiers tossed their grenades behind the retreating Germans to cover the retreat. As all the bodies ran past 5th squad they opened fire from their covered positions. Their goal: simply to pin down the enemy long enough for the bulk of the Axis forces to make their getaway.
Johan ran down the trench until sufficient obstacles were behind him to provide sufficient cover. He then turned and leapt upon the parapet of the trench and scramble over the side. He rolled down the embankment so as not to be present a target. At the end of the roll, Johan jumped to his feet and made a quick glance around. He leveled his rifle at the trench as other German soldiers came up and over to make their getaway. Should pursuit follow them over the wall after getting through 5th squad, he would make quick work of them.
With the last Germans running past him, one of them halted just behind him to provide any covering fire. Johan took the clue and ran past that soldier, stopping shortly to provide him some covering fire as well. This was how the two of them ran for a hundred yards or so. Once there, they stood together and fell back off the battlefield.

((Saying that you hit a soldier and knocked him down, ehhh could be border line god-modding, but I won't argue it.))
”Hey look! We got ‘em runnin’![/’I] shouted Private Muck. Masterson could see for himself that the Germans were in a full blown retreat from the battlefield. Masterson knew it was safer to take cover and fire from a distance, rather than to pursue them and risk any more casualties. He raised his right hand and pushed it out. ”Take cover! Hold your positions and fire on the Germans retreating!”
As Masterson went to get to cover, he saw a German grenade land before him, he jumped back but it wasn’t quick enough. The grenade exploded before him, knocking him back and to the ground. Masterson was still conscious, but could hear nothing but ringing in his ears and he could only see darkness. He then opened his eyes to a blurry vision. He stayed calm, knowing any excitement could only make things worse. He sat up against the trench wall and began to check himself. Private Webb came up to him and helped him look around. Webb looked at Masterson and nodded, ”Everything’s okay, Captain! You look fine!” Masterson could barely hear this as his hearing was slowly coming back. He simply nodded at Webb and got back up on his boots.
Masterson’s hearing came back for the most part and he collected his rifle off the ground. As he stood up, he could see the majority of the Germans had left the trench and were fleeing off the battlefield. Further back, he could see a single German soldier firing down at the trench to provide covering fire. Masterson steadied his M1 and aimed for the German’s head. He squeezed the trigger twice and before he could squeeze a third time, the trademark PING went off as the clip ejected from the action.
Masterson reloaded and by the time he looked back up to shoot again, the German could not be seen. He wasn’t aware of whether or not he fled or was dead under the grass. Masterson could see several more grenades explode down the trench, thus was the reason he halted his men from advancing. Had they kept going, that’s be him and his men inside the series of blasts.
As the final grenades went off, Masterson had his men move up and clear out the remains of the trench. Each soldier checked the German bodies for any information. Some took money, others took personal items from the corpses, such as watches, etc. Masterson didn’t agree with looting, but he could understand it. In times of war, such criminal things are thought of ways to reduce stress.
Masterson slowly walked down the trench, he saw a German soldier sitting up against the trench wall, still breathing. The German looked up at Masterson and sighed. He attempted to raise his hands to surrender to Masterson, but before he could extend them, Masterson had held his rifle by the hip, and fired a single shot into the Germans head. He killed the German more for the German’s sake so he wouldn’t have to suffer anymore.
He looked down and noticed the German had a side holster. Inside the holster was a Luger pistol. Masterson crouched down and took the Luger from the holster and put it inside his cargo pocket on his pants. He then stood back up and looked around. All around him, smoke and bodies filled the battlefield. He sat back against a crate and let out a small sigh. He removed his helmet and continued to think about the day’s events. His men leaped up to the German mortar positions and secured them, and then destroyed them with grenades.
Private Webb came up to Masterson and saluted. Masterson saluted back and gave out his final orders of the day. ”Send for Lieutenant Jones, tell him we hold the trench, to cease fire and meet me here. The Germans have retreated, we’ve taken Lyons.” Private Webb saluted Masterson and set off for Lieutenant Jones.

((Before it's closed!))
Masterson didn't make eye contact with him. Instead he grabbed Webb by the shoulder and opened his breast pocket. From it he pulled a half pack of Lucky Strikes and a Zippo Lighter. He took a cigarette and put it in his mouth and flicked open the light and lit the cigarette. He put the lighter and pack back into Webb's pocket and sent him on his way.
Masterson took a long drag of the cigarette as Jones shot a round into the air for victory. Still not making eye contact, Masterson spoke. "Best conserve your ammo. Word has it there's a battery of 105mm's down by Breacourt just north of Carentan. I've been asked to take B Company and go knock it out." Masterson took another drag of his cigarette and spoke some more to Jones.
"Get me a body count on both ours and theirs. Take whatever weapons are on the field and consolidate them into the house. Regiment should be down here later to collect them. And if you find any Germans still alive, do them the favor and execute them. We've got four prisoners as it is." Masterson took one more puff of his cigarette and flicked it into the dirt. he stompped it out with his boot and then finally looked up at Jones.
"You're dismissed Lieutenant." Masterson didn't wait for a salute. He quickly turned around and put his helmet on and set off down the trench to finish up.
