Character History:
In the year 1913 a child was born in a Tokyo prefecture to a kenjutsu instructor. The instructor was Keisuke Fujita who was married to Chizuru. The dojō taught the style of Ittō-ryū. When his son was bored, Keisuke remembered his father, Fujita Gorō talking about one man who made a difference in his life was Hijikata Toshizō, the man who had been the Assistant Commander of the Shinsengumi. This spurred him to name his son after that man. His son was given the name Fujita Toshizō. Upon an early age Toshi had started learning kenjutsu, the exact style his father was teaching. When he was learning, he father had a hard time understanding why Toshi wasn’t able to practice very well, but he then tried teaching the techniques, but let Toshi use his left hand.Writing Sample:
Within his early years, a new boy, the same age as Toshizō joined the dojō, his name was Nakayama Itsuki. The two gave each other nicknames, Toshizō becoming Toshi, and Itsuki became Ikki. The two were learning kenjutsu together at an amazing pace, though Toshi was at the top of the dojō in skill, even being left-handed. It was in this time that Toshi went through the dojō’s list of those who have mastered the style. He found one left-handed user, his name was Hajime Saitō, the Third Unit of the Shinsengumi’s Captain, an amazing swordsmen. It was in secret at this time that Keisuke told his son, that this man was his grandfather. Toshi was honored to have such a man in his family, which proved an instrumental point in him mastering the style in the following year at the age of 13. For the next two years he went to another dojō which taught the style of the Tennen Rishin-ryū. In those two years he mastered all of the techniques in a left-hand form.
When he returned home he was greeted by his mother, who was the only one showing him emotion throughout his childhood. When he went to a lesson of his fathers, the group stood off to the sides as Toshi was given a shinai. His father had one in hand too. He then told Toshi to fight him with everything he had. The two started combat at a fast pace, with Toshi starting from the hip. Their blades met at amazing speed as Toshi was using everything he had learned, eventually defeating his father. When he did this, he father stopped, and went back to a shelf and pulled out a katana. He then went to present it to his son as a genpuku, or his coming of age ceremony. When Toshi drew the blade an inscription was on it. It read, “Senshi no tamashī” or Warrior’s Soul. After this he decided to switch his name to Hajime Toshizō. At this time he left the dojō to go get an education about the world. In his education he learned two languages that interested him, English and German, but he wasn’t very good at speaking them.
Throughout his education he carried his sword on his right hip in the traditional style. At one time a man told him he should not be carrying a sword, and before he could do anything, the man challenged him to a duel. He was the son of a high class official and drew a sabre to fight against him. Toshi fought in an expert manner, and he easily slew the man. When the duel was over, Toshi cleaned his blade and sheathed it. Afterwards, the official swore revenge on him, but Toshi said that he would not fight if it was revenge, because that is not what a warrior would do.
When he turned 18, he believed he could put his skills to use by joining the Imperial Army. In the military in 1931, he brought his sword with him, but he was told that he could not carry it because he was not an officer.
With an urgent notice, his unit was sent across the Sea of Japan to Manchuria where they started an invasion. When the soldiers landed they were under heavy fire by the enemy. With the lieutenant drawing his sword as he stood, a bullet went through his chest, having him fall. While he was still alive, Toshi went over and told him to commit sepukku for his honor, while handing his sword back to the officer. He then proceeded to stab himself. Toshi then fixed his bayonet as he shouted out something. He then shouted to fix bayonets. At this point, he shouted “Senshi no tamashī!” and charged out of their line towards the Chinese forces. Without getting hit miraculously, he started using his rifle as a spear, this ferociousness he had, scared many of the Chinese when the rest of the forces followed in suit and started attacking.
After this battle news of his feat reached his commanders, and he was promoted to Chūi or Lieutenant he was sent back to Japan. In Japan he requested to his commander if he could create a unit that would gather the warrior spirit of those with it. His superiors okayed it and created a new unit, and in the honor of its old enemy, the government recreated the Shinsengumi with Hajime Toshizō as the Commander. Here in Japan he was asking for recruits from the two dojōs he was at. He was successful in recruiting many members, enough from a company or something similar. With the recruits was his friend Ikki.
Now the unit was fully operational, and was on standby. Here Toshi took all of his soldiers into training with all weapons. They were a strictly light infantry unit. They learned how to fight with rifles with bayonets, and all the similar things. All soldiers carried a katana, and wore a tan uniform with white mountain edges, and a cord wrapped around the their sleeves and tied behind their back. Also one of the men would carry a banner with the kanji for sincerity on it. With four months of training the unit was ready for war when they went to China in 1937 under the command of the now 24 year old Toshizō.
The sun was starting to set on the field of battle as Itsuki Nakayama went to wake the commander, only to find that he was still awake, with his sword sheathed across his lap. “ Toshi wa, oki teru ka.” Ikki asked. “Hai.” Toshizō answered. “Chūi wa, chūgokujin ga kite iru.” Ikki stated as he looked in the direction of his unit. The Shinsengumi was busy hiding within the Chinese territory so they could block any troops from heading towards the frontline. “Arāto dansei.” Toshizō ordered as he stood up, sticking his sword through his belt on the right hip, leaving his rifle in its place because the group would return here, and then move on to another area. The sky was a beautiful color, one that would normally make people melt from the beauty, but no watching of that could be done now.Approved/Denied?: Approved
Within minutes the entire group was up and ready for combat, they knew the drill. Eliminate the group with no rifle shots, it would be extremely easy with the way the soldiers fought. Toshi wrapped a headband around his head as he stood in front of the troops. He let all the Unit Captains lead off their groups to the positions of ambush. They already knew how large the unit they were attacking was, since they were marching down the path. The units were lined in the forest alongside the road, the whole way of the unit, on all sides.
Toshi walked with Ikki next to him, and ten other men as he stepped out onto the path way in front of the marching Chinese. The banner that bore their emblem was raised as Toshi drew his sword and pointed it at the Chinese who were now twenty feet in front of them. “Watashi wa moto shinsen-gumi no Hajime Toshizō desu. Anata ga koko o tōru koto wa arimasen.” Toshi called out. After he finished he charged forward with his sword in hand. Upon reaching the Chinese soldiers, he started his battle. His blade cut through the first opponent sending his blood all over himself, with the same strike he twisted his hand that carried his sword through the next person’s shoulder, killing him.
Toshizō then proceeded to cut through the opponents, blood spilling out over the area. When he started seeing other soldiers from his unit cutting down opponents, though the Chinese were starting to surrender. The battle had ended in nearly fifteen minutes, no firearms had been fired, and no one knew about this. When the fighting finally ended, Toshi wiped his blade, dropping the cloth on the Chinese commander’s body, while also dropping a piece of paper, with the Shinsengumi’s insignia on it. ” Kiru shūjin. Sonogo, wareware ga mama ni narimasu.” He ordered as fifteen prisoners were slain. The blood covered the ground. It was all for the protection of Japan. That was what he kept telling himself.
”10 Tan'i o tsukuru chūi wa, hakai sa reta.” Ikki stated as he came up to Toshi. ” Hai, sore wa bēsu ni modoru made no jikandesu.” Toshi replied as all of the unit Captains walked back to him. ” Junbi wa, honsha ni modorimasu.” Toshi ordered to all of the men as they gathered. ”Hai chūi!” All of the Captains replied at the same time.
Toshi sheathed his sword, and started marching back to where their camp was. Watashi wa Nippon o hogo shimasu. Watashi wa dare ga kanojo ni gai ni kibō o motarasu mono o hakai shite shimaimasu. Toshi thought as he continued on, getting a scowl in his mind.
Five days later the Shinsengumi reached the headquarters of their division. They all walked through to where they were staying, all of the infantry that watched them, stood out of their way while giving a salute, yet the people in the town were staying clear to the sides of the street as they saw these men. They struck fear into all those who went against them, but they were a high point for morale in those who stood with them.
When Toshi reached the outside of the divisional headquarters, he called out ”Sumimasen!” He entered the building while sliding his sword from his hip, and carrying it in hand as he walked to the commander’s office. “Chūi Hajime, inchirepōto.” he said as the door closed behind him.

Staff Notes:
Great application overall. I'll accept you as a Lieutenant in the Japanese Army. I've not got the best knowledge of Japanese ranks and such, so feel free you change the rank name and insignia if anything is off.
