What Army will Your Character Serve Beneath?
US
Character History:
Born in New York City, USA, Michael John B. Ryan was born into a poor Irish family which consisted of 5 siblings, more specifically, 3 older brothers and 2 older sisters, Michael being the youngest of the five.
His father was a former soldier, one of the few Irish-American veterans of the Battle of Somme, and was now a shoe salesman, going door to door in the busy but dangerous crime prone streets of Manhattan during the 1920's.
Their mother on the otherhand was a former school teacher, a second generation Irish American who taught most of the children in the Apartment building where they lived in, which was in the center of Hell's Kitchen.
Still a baby boy, he was only 2 years old when America, still trying to expand its economy after the victory of World War I, suddenly plunged into economic ruin, creating the Great Depression and causing its spread world wide.
Because they were poor, life became even harder for them. Their father, a desperate man after his job became unprofitable, turned to a life of crime to feed and support his family. He worked for Owney "The Killer" Madden, an Irish American gangster who owned the infamous "Cotton Club".
With this new income, working as a bodyguard for Owney, the Ryan family survived the Depression, but not without hardships and sacrifices. Two of Michael's brothers died due to gang related activities and one of Michael's older sisters died giving birth to a baby girl because of her boyfriend.
Life was amiable, and when the Depression ended, Michael found himself with only two surviving siblings, his older brother, Matthew Peter Ryan and his older sister, Mary Jane Ryan. All three sibilings would go onto public school, and surprisingly, all three would graduate from highschool with the higest honors. However they would go on their seperate ways. Matthew would become a scholar at a local college, studying Law and trying to pass the Bar while Michael's older sister, Mary, would study to become a Nurse, eventually stationed in Pearl Harbour as an intern.
Michael on the other hand, after finishing his highschool, decided to help the family by taking care of their eldery mother and visiting his father in prison, whom was arrested in 1937 for murdering a rival gang member, and was sentenced for life.
Working as a bartender in 1940, Michael never knew that one year later, on that fateful morning of December 8th, while he was polishing some glasses, Japan had bombed Pearl Harbour a day earlier.
At first, he was surprised, but later he would become angry, after his mother recieved a telegram that his sister, Mary, had been killed during the surprise attack. Heartbroken of the news, their mother succumbed to a heart failure and died. Both remaining Ryans, Matthew Ryan and Michael Ryan, would mourn their mother and visit their father for one last time.
Then, weeks after the bombing, both would join the Army.
His older brother joined the Airforce, becoming a Captain in the 23rd Bomber Group which was stationed in England. Michael on the other hand, volunteered for the Paratroopers, and was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division which was still in training.
Because of his high honors, he was selected among the few choosen, to be enrolled in the Officer Training Program, where he would earn the rank of First Lieutenant.
There, he would be assigned to Able Company, 501st Parachute Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, which, 3 years later, would become famous for their airdrop during the Normandy Invasions, for the brave but spectacular failure of Operation Market Garden, and the heroic stand against the freezing hell in the Battle of the Bulge.
