What Army Will You Serve Beneath? : US(American)
Nationality: American
Character History:
A former author living in normandy, relatively far from where the allies landed, as the Nazis attacked and took over france through the quick blitzkrieg, the man Postponed his works, walked out and went into hiding from the fascist authorities, and is trying to lend a hand to help bring down the dictatorship. Every empire has shattered, why not this one?Writing Sample:
He speaks english and german fluently due to the areas of france he lived in before this, and was luckily outside of europe during WWI. Outside of the war-torn times, he enjoys a good green tea, italian cuisine, and a good rifle. Hates hunting, is fond of Germany, excluding the NSDAP government currently there, trying to take over the world.
David's green-irised eyes twitched, the pupils shrunk and his entire body grew stiff as that feeling... that feeling... he couldn't explain it, but knew what it was. A stare, a glare, someone watching him.Approved/Denied?: Approved
Obvious, he was nowhere safe, not even at home he would have been, the Vichy government would also have gestapo search people's houses, and he would die a forgotten death if they'd have caught him. Knowing snipers could be everywhere, David adjusted the red-tinted shades he always wore and stepped back, pressing his back against a tree in these cold, northern french woods and looked around him through the shades and the corners of his view, without moving his head to attract as little attention as possible. No one here. No one there.
Time to disappear. NOW. David had nothing on him, not a gun (it would make him look like an enemy if they would have sent police at him, and a little pistol would do little against a patrol of SS armed with Heckler & Koch MP40s) so he started to run, though not straightforward; He zigzagged, making it as difficult as possible for a potential sniper or armed foe to target him efficiently and shoot him.
Too bad he ran right over to the foes he feared so much!
"Halt, bleiben sie stehen!" [Stop, stand still!] he heard as a troop of Wehrmacht soldiers, only five in number, but armed with Mauser C96 pistols and the aforementioned MP40s, making them more than a threat to David.
David followed their order, obeying. He understood the german language; As an author it was obligatory to know the masterpieces of european literature, and he learnt german quite well, refusing to have any translated copies of the beautiful operas of Carl Maria von Weber, or the theatrical pieces of Goethe...
The nazi patrol did not expect the man to stop in his tracks that suddenly, for the french were not a country too keen to learn languages other than theirs, like the Americans, so David had heard some time before that. David rose his hands. "Hey, Ich bin unbewaffnet und unschuldig, sie können ruhig bleiben!" [Hey, I am un-armed and innocent, you can stay calm!] said David in perfect German accent.
It worked. Of course, the Germans wouldn't kill one of their own unless they would show any sign of hostility or not belong to their political party, so to keep his sorry ass alive, David Francois Chatrousse would have to escogitate a realistic excuse for being in the woods, alone.
"Ich bin vor den Resistance-söldnern abgehauen. Ich bin eigentlich eins eurer Spione. Mein Funkgerät ist verlorengegangen, also muss ich schnell zur nächsten Stadt. Helft mir dabei, ihr braucht mir keine Waffe zu geben, das würde Verdacht schöpfen, meine Kameraden." [I've been escaping from the french resistance mercenaries. Actually, I'm one of your spies. My radio equipment has gone lost, so I must get to the closest town as quickly as possible. Help me at it, you don't need to give me a gun, that would be too suspicious, comrades.] He added, not leaving the german soldiers time to question him on his whereabouts.
"Was sagt ihr, sollen wir ihn glauben?" [What do you say, should we believe him?] asked one of the troops to another. "Ja, er hat uns direkt angesprochen und so wie er schaut, sieht es nicht aus als würde er lügen." [Yeah, he's spoken to us directly and the way he looks doesn't seem like he's lying.] said the troops. David nodded at those words, further eliminating the possibility of being a frenchie who learned the sentences he said by heart.
"Können sie sich ausweisen?" [Are you able to identify yourself?] asked a soldier, his MP40 lowered. The fact that he didn't have a cold metal barrel pointed at him relieved David visibly made him sigh suspiciously, but his responce gave the nazis a reason to be believable. "Puh, endlich jemand der mich nicht erschießen will! Diese Franzecken sind wild wie Barbaren! Ach, alles was ich hatte habe ich nicht aus meinem Versteck mitnehmen können. Ich musste so schnell wie möglich nehmen, die waren mir ganz dicht auf den Fersen. Abgeschüttelt habe ich sie, zum Glück!"[Phew, finally someone not planning to shoot me! Those frenchies are as wild as barbarians. Oh! Everything I owned was left at my former hideout, I couldn't bring it all with me: I had to run as fast as I could, they were right at my tail. Luckily I lost them.] he said. He pointed with his thumb back in the woods.
Being relaxed while lying, smiling and showing emotion was the perfect way to make a foreign individual trust you. As a youngster, during his time in England, where he learnt English, he had learnt how to act and played roles in plays, so acting in a realistic way was a good talent of his he had to work hard for.
Now it was paying off!
The german soldier patted his back.
"Ganz ruhig, sag uns einfach deinen Namen, wir melden es dann nach oben." [Calm down, just tell us your name, we'll contact the superiors.]
"Auf keinen Fall, Vorschrift ist vorschrift! Als Spion habe ich schon genug preisgegeben um mein Leben zu schützen, ihr hättet micht vielleicht erschossen ohne zu wissen dass ich auf eurer Seite war. Ich kann euch meinen Namen nicht nennen, so sehr es mir leid tut." [Under no circumstance, rules are rules! As a spy I have already revealed enough to protect myself: You could have shot me without knowing I am on your side. As much as it saddens me, I cannot tell you my name.] said David, patting the soldier back, with an expression just reeking of 'tough luck!'
"Ach was, so soll es sein! Gerade nach den Vorschriften. Gehen sie noch einen halben Kilometer nach Norden, da ist eine Stadt mit einen Rathaus wo sie den Hauptmann alles berichten können und ihre Ausrüstung erneuern können." [Indeed, so it should be! Exactly according to regulations. Go about half a kilometre north, there's a town with a city hall, you can report in to the Hauptmann and renew your equipment.]
"Danke. Wie ist ihr Name, Soldat? Ich würde mich bei ihnen bedanken. Sie sind ein guter Mensch, das würde sogar ein Feind sagen!" [Thank you. What is your name, soldier? I would like to thank you. You are a good person; Even an enemy would say so!]
"Ach, ich? Heinz Ullrich, Wehrmacht-patroullie. Meine Freunde hier sind Fabian Richter, Franz von Schiele, Karl-Heinz Jaspers, und Egon Schulte. alles treue Diener des Führers." [Oh, me? Heinz Ullrich is my name, Wehrmacht-patrol. My friends here are Fabian Richter, Franz von Schiele, Karl-Heinz Jaspers and Egon Schulte. All faithful servants to the führer.]
"War wundervoll, eure Bekanntschaft zu machen. Ich muss mich leider von euch verabschieden, die Arbeit geht vor, wie ihr wisst. Auf wiedersehen!" [Was wonderful to make your acquaintance. Unfortunately, I must leave; Work goes first, as you know. Farewell!] said David, giving all the troops a friendly and warm handshake, nodding, and jogging north, making sure not to move as if he were running away, and disappeared from their sight, raising his hand partially to give his acquaintances the Hitlergruß.
"Ach, was ein netter Kerl. Hätte er sich nicht so charismatisch ausgegeben hätte ich ihn echt erschossen." [Oh, what a nice lad. If he hadn't presented himself charismatically like that, I really might have shot him!"
Suddenly from the bushes, they heard a voice. "IHR SCHEIß-IDIOTEN!" [You f***ing idiots!]
A german sniper, armed with a beautiful german sniper rifle with a large scope stepped out. He panted, pointing at where David had jogged away. "Verdammt noch mal, er ist ein Franzose! Erledigt den Kerl, na los!" [Damn it again, he's a frenchman! Get rid of the man, go go!] he shouted. The soldiers jumped in surprise, loaded their guns and shouted in anger at being tricked.
David Francoic Chatrousse lit himself a filterless cigarette. Being literate and knowing how to be friendly to anyone, knowing their language and getting into anything without batting an eye was a good skill during this unromantic and merciless war. If he were a nazi, they would have really used him as a spy, he assumed.
He finished his smoke in the dark alley of town, stomped on the butt silently and pocketed his hands, knowing he was safe. He hadn't ran north, as the nazis had said, but to the east, erasing his trail neatly...
