Character History:
Hans von Haussen was born as an illegitament child to a German farm girl named Nina Trussel and the owner of the farm, Michal Horner, in 1906. Wishing not to soil his family name, the Mr. Horner had Nina send the infant Hans away to her sister, Steffi, who lived in Munich, or lose her job and be left homeless with an extra mouth to feed. And so Hans grew up as an average child of the early 1900s, and kept in decent contact with his birth mother while attending school and living under the supervision of his aunt and her husband, Mr. Haussen.Writing Sample:
Forwarding many years, to 1928, Hans graduated from the university with a degree in sociology, and he intended to become a school teacher. However, in 1929, the global economic meltdown rattled the world, sending millions upon millions into poverty. Having nowhere else to look for to money and security, a now 23 year old Hans enlisted into the Army. His training went well, and he graduated from selection with honors, being granted the rank of Feldwebel for his meritorious duty to act both during and away from exercises. He had the true spirit of a leader, and was spoken highly of by his superiors.
As the years continued, Hans made his way successfully up the chain of command through staffing and exercise of skills. He was considered any commanding officer's prized executive, and in 1933, was shown off by several generals to the newly elected Chancellor of Germany, Adolf Hitler. Hans was thrilled to have met one of the world's current most influencial figures, and listened to Hitler speak of the German people's might and will. He took every word in. It absorbed in his mind, that the patriotism of the Fatherland was like no other.
It was soon after his inflatuation with the Furher's words on Germany that Hans elected to join the newly formed Waffen SS. He felt it was his duty to personally defend the Nazi Party of Germany. And did so by displaying the red swastika armband, lightning bolt lapel stiches, and the Totenkopf crush cap that he so very admired next to his newly polished Hauptmann ranks. After his promotion and assignment to lead a company of SS commandos, Hans was issued a pamplet that was passed amongst the ranks about the threatening population known as the Juden. The pamplet explained that the Jewish people were the cause of Germany's depression, that the Jews had caused trouble for the past thousand years, and that if the Jews were not dealt with, it would be the end of the Third Reich.
Hans was outraged. How could a religious group come together and plot to destroy what was so great? Hans was so filled with his own propaganda, that he and become exactly what Adolf Hitler had invisioned, a compliant killer. He was loyal to the cause, and would fight for any cost. And so Hans was give such a task. On the night of November 10, 1938, Hans and his unit were deployed onto the streets of Berlin to assist the SA in detaining Jewish males for immediate arrest and transfer to detainment facilities. Hans did not question the order. He knew that this was for the assassination of the German minister in Paris, and Goebbels gave the order to arrest any Jew, by now hated by Hans, who could be considered a suspect.
Into the early hours, Hans' unit, assisting the Gestapo, took several hundered German Jews and had them transported to the depots and carried away to prison facilities across Germany. Hans did not know exactly where'd they go, but felt anywhere but in his proud Aryan country was fine. The arrests ended just a few days later, and Hans and his men were withdrawn.
On September 1, 1939, Hans and his unit once again saw action, this time on foreign soil. Germany had invaded Poland, and Hans and his unit were sent in behind the Heer to remove any undesired population and deport them to Germany for detainment. The job was performed with ease, and it was here that Hans was given the rank of Oberst. The new Colonel von Haussen was given several companies of SS soldiers to command, and as the Second World War progressed, Hans found himself all over Europe and even parts of Africa. It was now a time of uncertainty, but Hans had no fear. He had the determination of a true Aryan. The heart of a soldat, and the cause of the Furher...
The stench of sweat and blood ran down the already soaked tunic of Hans' uniform. He paced himself as he crouched and pulled his way through the limbs and grass of the dark forest. Seperated from his unit after an artillery barage had left him disorientated and unarmed. This was no good. He, however, was determined to find his way back to his line and resume command.Approved/Denied?: Approved
He continued through the thick and the thin, hearing sporadic gunfire at unspecific times, and would often stop at the first sound of crackling of limbs. Who was there? Was it one of his men out to find him? Or the enemy attempting to hunt him down like a ravaged canine? He would refuse to sit and wait for that answer, and he continued to move his way through the brush.
Looking above, not much could be seen, it was a dark night with total cloud coverage. Not even the distant shelling of mortars and artillery could illuminate the sky well enough for visibility. But Hans preferred this. It would make him less easy to spot. Taking this into consideration, he knew it was better to leave his black tunic on as well. It was most unfomfortable however. The wool was soaked in sweat and itching and rashing against Hans' skin. But in a time like this, one does not mind these now minor inconveniences, as one is now fighting to survive.
As Hans came to a thick tree, he took the time to sit and gather his bearing. It was here that he looked up and could see the sillouettes of several men coming in his direction. He didn't take the time to think. He acted on instinct and slid himself supine into the shadows. His eyes continued to stare, not blinking once, as the shadowy figures drew closer. Hans slowed his breathing. The slightest sound could compromise him. He breathed shallow but fast, his heart rate increased, he began to sweat again. And he could only blink it out as it pooled into his eyes.
The figures drew closer, obviously holding weapons, and scanning the terrain. Had they been tracking him? Hans wondered. He conitnued to look on in caution as the men came closer, and closer. It was now certain that these men were going to either step over him, or on him, and there was nothing Hans could do. He figured at best he could plead for his life when he was discovered, but was prepared to fight with his hands if need be.
Hans was just about to make a move to show himself when the lead man stopped. He looked down in Hans' direction and made eye contact with him. Hans hoped he didn't see him, but knew he had been spotted when he saw the face of the man looking at him smile. This confused Hans. But suddenly things became clear when the figure spoke in a thick German accent. "We've been looking for you, sir. We tracked you for about a mile trying to call you, but you seemed in a bit of a hurry!" The men jeered at their commander, having followed him and enjoying his frantic urge to evade. Typical combat humor.
Hans arose from his position and gave a stern, but relieved look. One of the men handed him an MP40 and he then jerked his head to order the men to follow him. They made a fast walk across the forrest, continuing with their mission...
